J.J. ShimkoJ.J. Shimko, Lead Pastor
I’ve been pastoring Light and Life Chapel for seven years and have fallen in love with the Williamsport area. So much to do and a great place to raise a family. However, I grew up in Oklahoma in the church, as a pastor’s kid in the Church of the Nazarene and in the Free Methodist Church. I’m a graduate of Eastern Nazarene College in 1994 with a B.A. in History. I went on to receive a Master’s of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1998. I have been a pastor in Free Methodist Churches in Alabama and New York and assisted in planting a United Methodist Church in Southern Indiana (Louisville, KY area). Before coming to Central PA, I served in lay ministry at Northside Christian Church in New Albany, Indiana while working at Samtec, Inc. In 2016, I was accepted as a Beeson Scholar in the Preaching and Leadership Cohort in the Doctorate of Ministry Program at Asbury Theological Seminary with plans on graduating in May 2019.
I love to spend time exercising, reading, listening and playing music, and simply hanging out with my family. Vicki, my wife, who also serves on staff at Light and Life Chapel as our Worship Leader, is a gifted physical therapist, and my four incredible kids, Makenzie, Caleb, Jonathan, and Abby Grace are the loves of my life! The verse I live by is found in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Don’t hesitate to send me a message via email or Twitter as seen above. I’d love to hear from you!

I grew up worshiping in the Lutheran Church in Hughesville. After returning home from military service in Vietnam as a hospital corpsman with the Marines in 1975, I started to attend Light and Life Chapel. I have a BS in Health Care and worked for the Susquehanna Health System for 30 years until I retired in 2009. I’ve served in leadership for most of the last twenty years, while also coordinating Connection Groups for the past fifteen years. After retiring from Susquehanna Hospital in 2009, I joined the staff of Light and Life as their Administrative and Connection Pastor. In July 2015, I was ordained as an Elder in the Free Methodist Church at our General Conference in Orlando, FL. My deepest desire is to build God’s kingdom in our community. I believe strongly in these words of Christ from Matthew 28:19-20, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

I have been with Light and Life since 2009 when my husband became the Lead Pastor. I grew up in Kentucky and graduated from the University of Kentucky as a Physical Therapist in 1994. Currently, I work as a therapist at Susquehanna Hospital In-Home Rehabilitation. Since I have four kids of my own, I have a genuine passion for seeing our kids grow in the knowledge of God’s Word in a fun and interactive way. I grew up in church but have a heart to see people of all backgrounds experience the same life-changing love I have found in Jesus. My life verse is found in John 15:5b where Jesus says, “Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”

Happily married to Nancy (Confer) Perry, who grew up in Williamsport, since 1964. I have two wonderful daughters, Susan and Sarah, who have blessed me with five grandchildren. A graduate of Mansfield (PA) Univiversity in 1969 (BS in Secondary Education) with a Master’s of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1977. As a Free Methodist pastor, I served from 1969-2010 in churches on the Genesis (formerly Genessee) and Susquehanna Conferences (NY, KY, PA). My wife and I returned to the Williamsport area in 2010 after retiring from full-time pastoral ministry and are settled in South Williamsport. One of many favorite passages of scriptures comes from Ephesians 3:14-21 which declares, “When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father,15 the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit…”

After growing up in Williamsport and the Free Methodist Church on Penn Street, I found the love of my life in Lynton Perry. We partnered in full-time ministry for over 41 years while raising our beautiful girls and having the opportunity to minister in a variety of settings. In our retirement years, we are experiencing a renewed passion for God’s people and for seeing others begin the journey to follow Jesus. I’m excited about what God is doing at Light and Life Chapel and in my own life as He has been at work in some remarkable ways. As a result, I’ve leaned upon this passage of scripture in II Samuel 22:2-4, ““The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence. I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies.” My hope is for it to encourage you too.

I have been attending Light and Life Chapel for five years. We had been looking for a church home for several years when we decided to give Light and Life a try. From the moment we walked in we felt welcome and knew we where were God wanted us to be. I have a BS degree in Secondary Education, Science and have worked for the Williamsport Area School District as an 8th grade science teacher for fifteen years. I have two grown children, Ethan and Rachel, and have been married to my wife Robin for almost thirty years. I enjoy volunteering in the church in several capacities. I believe you will never be happier than when you are doing the will of God. My family has had many struggles along the way and my life verses are Romans 5:1-5, “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our suffering, because we know that suffering produces perserverance; perserverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

I trusted in Jesus as Savior at a very early age, but wasn’t until late teens that I began to go to church, develop, and grow in my relationship with Him. From then I have always enjoyed encouraging and coming alongside others. After going through a long, tough season in life, God brought my husband, David, and I to Light and Life Chapel. God has shown me what living in His freedom and grace looks like through the example others at Light and Life Chapel and especially His Word. I love how God has allowed me to serve Him with my husband, as well as intentionally, genuinely, and sincerely live the life that God is blessing us with. Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.” Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”
